Well-contained in Belgium's 2-0 to Italy in Group B, although his goal after 30 seconds of the second half of the opening game was dramatic proof of his speed and finishing ability. Lightning-fast Mpenza is the big Belgian hope for this summer and will pair up with Branko Strupar in a little and large partnership. Mpenza will look to make the most of Strupar's clever holding play and add to his seven goals in 22 matches. This will be his second major tournament, having appeared twice as a substitute at France 98. He also became the second youngest player ever to appear for Belgium when making his debut against Northern Ireland in February 1997. The younger of the two Mpenza brothers has grown in confidence since his transfer to Germany's Schalke 04. His pace and close control are likely to be a major asset for Belgium this summer. But he suffered a night of frustration against the Turks, missing chances and seeing a goal ruled out for offside
