Deflandre makes up for what he might lack in footballing ability with a never-say-die approach to the game.
He made his debut against neighbours Holland in 1996, but has yet to make the right-back position his own.
His reliability at right back has been a key factor in Club Bruges having the best defensive record in the Belgian league this season.
He will be hoping to bring some of that quality to the national side, which still has a tendency to leak too many goals. Made three appearances in France '98.
Impressive in the opening win over Sweden, especially moving forward, but unable to make any impact against a stubborn Italian defence while more concerned with the counter-attacks of Inzaghi, Totti et al. Disappointing against the Turks.
