First Round

A maximum of one team will qualify for the 2002 World Cup from the Oceania Football Confederation.

The first round sees ten teams drawn in to two groups of five. The two group winners progress to the next stage. Australia and New Zealand are the two seeded nations for the sections.

The winners will then play-off on a two-legged basis and the winner of this match will then play-off against the fifth placed team in the CONMEBOL section with the winner going on to the Finals.
