Either 13 or 14 teams will
qualify for the 2002 World Cup from the Union des Associations Europeennes de
Football (Union of European Football Associations), along with France as holders.
The nine group winners
qualify automatically. There will then be four play-offs between eight of
the runners-up from the group stage. The winners of the play-offs will then
qualify. The nation which was not drawn out in the European play-off will
take on a nation from the Asian section in a play-off for a place in the Finals.
