Asian Section World Cup Qualifying Draw

Two or three nations will qualify from the Asian Football Confederation for the 2002 World Cup. This is in addition to Japan and the Korea Republic, who qualify automatically as hosts.

Round One is run as a league system. There will be ten groups, each containing four nations (Myanmar withdrew from Group Two).

The ten group winners then enter the second stage, another league-based section. They will be divided into two groups of five, in a draw after the completion of the first phase, and the winners of these two groups qualify.

The two runners-up in the groups then compete in a two-legged play-off to win the right to take part in another play-off with a European team for a further place in the Finals.
