Airdrie survive extra challenge

Airdrie 1-1 Clydebank (Airdrie won 4-3 on pens)

First Division Airdrie scraped into the semi-finals of the Bell's Challenge Cup - but what a fright they received from their Second Division opponents.

It took a penalty-kick shoot-out after 120 minutes before the Diamonds got through to face Stranraer next Tuesday.

Bankies' player-coach Tommy Coyne hit a post in the spot-kick shoot-out and then their former Airdrie striker, Steve McCormick, had his effort saved by keeper Sanchez Broto.

Airdrie almost made it in normal time when Darren Brady hit a post and then Bankies' emergency keeper Henry Smith - who has been playing with Glenafton Juniors - pulled off three outstanding saves in extra time.

Airdrie went ahead in 55 minutes when Martin Prest's header beat Smith. Ten minutes later Bankies equalised with a header by Frenchman Raphael Jacquin.
