The silver boots of Dumbarton's Paddy Flannery dented Brechin's promotion hopes as he scored a great goal right at the death to claim the points in a 1-0 home win.
It was Brechin who had the better first half as they drove forward, creating chances and putting the home rear-guard under pressure.
Dumbarton keeper John Hillcoat twice saved his side from going behind when he denied Roddy Black and Roddy Grant.
Kevin Fotheringham should have done better than shoot wide from close range for the visitors and just before half-time Grant was handed the best chance of the first half after a slick pass from Lee Bailey, which he contrived to blast across the face of goal from point blank range.
The second half saw Brechin's normally lethal Grant miss several chances, while City goalkeeper Derek Soutar made a string of fine saves.
