But Airdrie showed great resilience and Stuart Taylor scored a vital goal after collecting Antonio Calderon's pass in 14 minutes.
Substitute Fabrice Moreau squandered a chance to level when he missed a penalty after John Anderson had fouled Martin Prest.
But Airdrie got the goal they deserved 66 minutes through a spectacular Calderon strike.
Livingston could have snatched it in the dying seconds, but David Bingham missed a penalty after a Craig Ireland foul.
Airdrie had Prest sent off nine minutes from the end.
