Full-time: Hibernian 1 - 1 Kilmarnock
Soccernet.com

Kilmarnock super sub Paul Wright denied Hibs the top spot in the Scottish Premier League with a stunning 86th-minute equaliser at Easter Road.

The Killie striker, who had only been on the field six minutes, was in the perfect place at the perfect time to finish with a rocket shot past Hibs goalkeeper Nick Colgan.

The goal was a heartbreaker for Hibs, who looked to be moving to the top of the table. However, the result was fully deserved by Kilmarnock for never giving up the fight and constantly pressing for the equalising goal.

The visitors started the 90 minutes very much on the offensive with Ally Mitchell heading over inside the first minute from an Andy McLaren corner.

In a fast and furious start it was Kilmarnock who nearly made the breakthrough with Colgan coming out to make a brave save by diving at the feet of McLaren, who had beat the Hibs offside trap.

Gus MacPherson then sent in a good cross and Colgan did well to hold Christophe Cocard's powerful header.

Hibs began to knock some neat passes around and looked dangerous themselves on a couple of occasions, but Kilmarnock were handling any danger quite easily.

Some neat play by Hibs forced Kilmarnock into conceding a free kick 20 yards from their goal.

This was the signal for Franck Sauzee to try one of his specials, but Gordon Marshall was more than a match for his shot as he dived down to his left to smother the ball.

At the other end Alan Mahood's run to the centre was brought to an abrupt end by Gary Smith.

A free kick from Gary Hay was wasted though when really they ought to have been testing the Hibs keeper from such a position.

Stuart Lovell sent in a dangerous cross from the right and Mixu Paatelainen headed goalwards with Marshall again saving it confidently.

After initially finding the visitors quite a handful, Hibs began to enjoy their best spell with some good pressure around the visitors' box, although Kilmarnock were still defending solidly.

Sauzee nearly caught out the Kilmarnock defence with a 50-yard pass which almost sent Russell Latapy clear but Ally Mitchell did very well to guide the dangerous midfielder away from goal.

McLaren nearly caught out Colgan on the half hour when, after twisting and turning on the edge of the box, he sent in a low shot which nearly caught out the keeper at his near post.

Hibs made the breakthrough on 33 minutes with a great goal.

Paatelainen did very well to elude his marker and stab home at the front post after a inch-perfect David Zitelli cross from the left side.

Kilmarnock immediately went on the attack, but were caught offside and Andy McLaren was booked for protesting at the decision.

Lovell then sent in another very good cross for Zitelli at the back post with McPherson doing brilliantly to head the ball away for a corner.

Boosted by the goal, Hibs finished the first half on a high by knocking the ball about some neat passes much to the delight of their support.

Two minutes into the second half Mathias Jack became the second player booked for persistent fouling.

On 52 minutes Hibs produced a great move with John O'Neil feeding Paatelainen who then sent Zitelli clear.

The Frenchman looked certain to score before the assistant referee raised his flag in a narrow offside decision.

Ian Durrant passed to McLaren whose curling 25-yard shot brought a stunning diving save by Cogan, who had to dive down to his left to finally tip the ball away for a corner.

Kilmarnock began to exert some real pressure on the Hibs defenders and their most dangerous player was McLaren, who always looked capable of getting his side back into this game.

After 70 minutes Kilmarnock went incredibly close to an equaliser when substitute Craig Dargo latched on to Mahood's pass before narrowly shooting past from the edge of the box.

McLaren then carved out a space for himself before sending in a low 25-yard shot which Cogan was equal to.

All the pressure and determination shown by Kilmarnock eventually paid off with that majestic strike earning them a deserved point.
