On-loan player Steven Boyack was the toast of Ayr, after his 10th minute goal put the Somerset Park side back into the promotion pack.
He was well placed to knock the ball home from close range, after John Bradford's effort had been cleared on the line by the Clyde defence.
Both sides were without a number of first-team regulars, and Clyde will feel aggrieved to have taken nothing from a match they dominated from the start.
The home side, although they lost, missed a couple of glorious chances.
In the first half Pat Keogh hammered the ball over from six yards. In the second, French striker Freddy Boniface glanced a header off the post, and despite numerous attempts the home side could not put the rebound over the line.
