Derek Holmes grabbed a late equaliser for Ross County after Pat McGinlay had given Ayr the lead early in the second half at Dingwall.
Former Celtic and Hibs striker McGinlay fired the Honest Men in front in the 56th minute when he collected a square pass from Glynn Hurst to send the ball wide of Nicky Walker from 25 yards.
County then brought on John McQuade and Holmes in an attempt to save the game.
A Paul Kinnaird cross in the 81st minute found Holmes on his own at the far post and the former Hearts striker bundled the ball over the line for the equaliser.
Ayr had the edge in the first half with new signing Steven Boyack from Dundee prominent, but there were few chances at either end in a poor contest.
