Despite the threat of new signing Alan Blaikie, visiting Stenhousemuir proved no match for Queen of the South as the Dumfries side notched up a 4-2 win with striker Peter Weatherson proving the hero.
Weatherson struck four times in a scintilating performance as he sealed a vital three points for the home side.
The first came after only 9 minutes when he slammed home from close range and within minutes the home side had almost made it two when Davidson headed goalward from a corner moments later but Steven Pittman cleared off the line.
Queens went further ahead in the 20th minute when the Stenhousemuir defence failed to clear a long ball upfield and Jarrod Suddick played in Weatherson to hit home his second goal of the game.
After the interval it was more of the same as the home side dominated and in the 57th minute Weatherson completed his hat-trick when he rammed home a cross from Stephen Pickering.
But Stenhousemuir hit back three minutes later when keeper David Mathieson was lured out of goal by a cross and Alan Blaikie headed into the empty net.
Both sides continued to press as the final whistle approached and Stenhousemuir pulled the gap back in the 68th minute when Scott Miller netted to reduce the deficit.
But it was the home side who were to seal all three points in the final minute as Weatherson netted again to make it 4-2.
