In the clash of Division Three's bottom two at Links Park it was visitors East Stirling who triumphed through a Dean McPherson goal.
In front of a vocal home support, it was Montrose who enjoyed the better of the early exchanges.
Despite having had no real possession it was East Stirling who took the lead after 21 minutes when McPherson drove home from Steve Stewart's knock-down.
Montrose, to their credit, battled well and went close to equalising at the start of the second half when, with 53 minutes gone, Mike McKenzie showed great skill inside the box to force a fine save from 'keeper Jim Butter.
The home side continued to press, and had chances to level in the latter stages of the game but East Stirling held on to clinch the win.
