ASUNCION, Oct 8 (Reuters) - Paraguay have recalled defender Carlos Gamarra for their friendly international away to Spain next week, the Paraguayan Football Association (APF) said on Tuesday.
Gamarra missed August's match against world champions
Brazil, when Paraguay pulled off a shock 1-0 win, saying he
wanted to concentrate on winning a first-team place at Italy's
Inter Milan, his new club.
Free-kick and corner specialist Francisco Arce, who is based
with Brazil's Palmeiras, was left out at his own request, having
said he wants a break from international football.
Bayern Munich striker Roque Santa Cruz is injured while
extrovert goalkeeper Jose Luis Chilavert is without a club after
becoming involved in a bitter legal dispute with French outfit
Racing Strasbourg, where he last played.
Left-back Denis Caniza is also injured.
Paraguay's attack will be led by Jose Cardozo, who is the
leading scorer in the Mexican championship with 14 goals in only
11 games for Toluca.
The squad features a mixture of experienced and
locally-based younger players, including uncapped Cerro Porteno
defender Edgar Balbuena, midfielder Diosnal Burgos and striker
David Gomez.
Spain and Paraguay met in the World Cup with the Europeans
winning 3-1. The match will be played in Logrono on October 16.
The team will be coached by Anibal Ruiz, who has been
promoted from the under-20 team to replace Italian Cesare
Maldini.
