NAIROBI, June 9 (Reuters) - The Kenyan government continued their battle with the Kenya Football Federation (KFF) on Saturday by declaring the sacking of national team coach Reinhardt Fabisch illegal.
Sports Minister Francis Nyenze said KFF chairman Maina
Kariuki and his entire executive committee, who the government
dissolved last month, had no legal right to effect any changes
in the national team management.
'They (KFF) have no legal right of sacking Fabisch because
they are not in office,' Nyenze told Reuters in a telephone
interview.
The minister dissolved KFF and Kenya Cricket Association
(KCA) on May 17 and nominated caretaker committees to replace
them. But the Kenyan High Court dismissed the minister's actions
and reinstated both associations five days later.
However, the minister has continued to insist that the
decisions remain in force until he is served with the court
ruling, which he says will be challenged in court.
'Only the caretaker committee has the right to make any
changes in the national team's management. No one else. Fabisch
should be ready to join the national team's camp on Monday to
start preparations for African Cup of Nations qualifications,'
Nyenze said.
Fabisch, meanwhile, declined comment, saying he has not
received communications about his alleged sacking from KFF.
'I have no comment until I receive the communication. My
lawyers are handling the matter and I would like to reserve any
comments until KFF communicates to me in writing,' Fabisch told
Reuters by telephone.
The KFF supremo announced Fabisch's sacking at a news
conference on Friday, allegedly for engaging in politics.
'He can not be a politician of the game,' Kariuki told the
media. Fabisch's contract was due to end in August.
When Nyenze dissolved the KFF executive on May 17, Fabisch
was reported to have addressed the press on a tour of Tanzania
and supported the move.
He also made remarks that were perceived to cast aspersions
on KFF's management in a television talk show with a local
television station a week ago.
Fabisch was first hired by KFF in 1986 and sacked in 1987
after taking Kenya to the final of All African Games in Nairobi.
He was recalled in 1996 and fired in 1997 after Kenya failed
to qualify for the 1998 World Cup finals and African Cup of
Nations. He was recalled in December 2001.
