JOHANNESBURG, May 22 (Reuters) - A win for Orlando Pirates
against Ajax Cape Town on Wednesday will give the Soweto club
their first South African premier league title since 1994.
Pirates need three points from their remaining two matches
to go ahead of defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns, who ended
their league programme on Sunday with 59 points.
Kaizer Chiefs are the only other side still with a
mathematical chance of taking the title but they have to win
their three remaining matches to finish with 60 points.
Pirates, who are the only South African side to have won an
African club title, have 58 points ahead of Wednesday's home
match.
Their final game is the outstanding clash against Chiefs,
which was called off after 30 minutes in April because of the
stadium crush at Ellis Park, wich led to the death of 43
people.
June 2 was set as the tentative date for the replaying of
the match but the two clubs have not been able to agree on the
new date nor venue.
A win for Pirates on Wednesday would hand coach Gordon
Igesund his second championship. Igesund took Durban club
Manning Rangers to the title in 1997.
Last month, Igesund was attacked by a busload of supporters
at a Pirates training session in a crude bid to get him to leave
the club but has steadfastly refused to resign.
