BUENOS AIRES, Dec 26 (Reuters) - River Plate, who are still debating who should coach the team next year, have added former Uruguayan international Enzo Francescoli to their list of candidates.
Vice-president Alfredo Davicce said on Tuesday that Francescoli had joined current coach Americo Gallego, fellow Uruguayan Hugo de Leon and former River coach Ramon Diaz on the shortlist.
'The first candidate is Gallego, the second is Ramon (Diaz) and their third is Francescoli,' Davicce said.
Francescoli, who retired from playing in 1998, ended his career at the club where he was immensely popular with the supporters. He has not coached a professional team before.
Gallego led River Plate to the Argentine Clausura championship title in the first half of the year but could be a victim of the success of arch-rivals Boca Juniors.
Boca completed a unique treble this year, winning the Apertura championship, the South American Libertadores Cup and the Intercontinental Cup, increasing the pressure on their bitter rivals.
