PARIS, Oct 9 (Reuters) - RC Lens striker Daniel Moreira has been called up to replace David Trezeguet who has been forced through injury to pull out of France's Euro 2004 group one qualifiers against Slovenia and Malta.
French coach Jacques Santini had called on Trezeguet on
Tuesday to take the place of Olivier Kapo after the AJ Auxerre
player sustained a calf injury during a league match last
weekend.
But Trezeguet, who returned for Juventus last week after a
two-month injury lay-off, decided it was too soon to make his
international comeback in the matches against Slovenia at the
Stade de France on Saturday and away to Malta next week.
"The medical staff of Juventus has realised that David
is still suffering from a painful knee after the matches against
Newcastle and Como and they have notified the French
team doctor," a statement from Trezeguet's Italian club said.
"They have agreed to delay the comeback of David Trezeguet
to help him to fully recover."
Trezeguet came on as a substitute against Newcastle in the
Champions League match in Turin last week and also played
against Como in Serie A on Sunday.
It is the first time that the 25-year-old Moreira has been
called up by his country at full international level.
"I'm real happy and really proud as I'm certainly at my very
best at the moment," the under-21 forward said. "I have always
dreamed of playing for France."
Moreira, in the best form of his career, has scored twice
for Lens in the Champions League - in the 2-1 defeat at home to
AC Milan and the 3-1 loss at Deportivo Coruna last week.
"My best position on the pitch is number nine but I can also
play on the wing," Moreira said. "Alongside (Sylvain) Wiltord
and (Thierry) Henry I'm certain I'm going to improve.
"I'm expecting a lot from the next few days. This is an
opportunity I must not miss."
France beat Cyprus 2-1 away in their opening qualifier on
September 7.
