FC Aarau announce plans to become limited company

ZURICH, Sept 18 (Reuters) - Swiss Nationalliga side FC Aarau plan to raise five million Swiss francs to fund a new stadium by becoming a limited company, the club announced on Wednesday.

Aarau president Michael Hunziker told a press conference the floating of 'FC Aarau AG', as the company is to be known, will help safeguard the future of football in Aarau.

The club hopes the project will help raise the five million francs needed to build the proposed new home in Mittelland Park.

'This will show up whether the city and the whole region want a football club which has a future in football or not,' said Hunziker. 'The venture (aims) to see a stadium of full shareholders.'

Christian Stebler, the project manager of the new stadium, which is planned for completion in 2008, said the club could not wait for success on the pitch to raise the funding needed.

'We cannot wait until the first team plays better,' he said. 'The decisions are for the future and are of crucial importance and must now be met.'

The launch of FC Aarau AG is planned for later this year with the club aiming to persuade 15,000 fans to buy into the club as well as 1,500 small-to-medium sized business and 150 large corporations.

Aarau were promoted to the Nationalliga this season after the demotion of FC Lugano, FC Sion and Lausanne-Sports because of fears over the financial stability of the three clubs.

But Aarau have struggled in their first season back in the top flight and are propping up the 12-team table with only seven points from their opening 12 games.

Hunziker added: 'A crisis (on the field) is also a chance. Either one goes down, or one becomes stronger than ever.'
