MOSCOW, July 15 (Reuters) - Vitaly Shevchenko has quit as
coach of Torpedo Moscow, the Russian premier league club said on
Monday.
'On Monday, Shevchenko submitted his resignation, which was
accepted by the club's chairman,' Torpedo spokeswoman Anjelika
Biryukova said.
Biryukova said reserve team trainer Sergei Petrenko had been
appointed caretaker coach and would be in charge for Tuesday's
Moscow derby against premier league leaders Lokomotiv.
She said the 50-year-old Shevchenko did not explain his
motives, but his decision to resign did not come as a big
surprise following a five-game losing streak which left Torpedo
in 11th place and just two points from the relegation zone.
Torpedo have become the sixth of the 16 premier league clubs
to change coaches less than halfway through the season.
Shevchenko steered Torpedo to a top-five finish in his
previous three seasons with the Moscow side and this year they
were expected to challenge city rivals Spartak, Lokomotiv and
CSKA for the Russian league title.
