Modena and Como promoted to Serie A

MILAN, May 12 (Reuters) - Modena and Como won promotion to Italy's Serie A on Sunday after rivals Napoli could only draw at Cosenza.

Como beat Empoli 2-0 and Modena drew 0-0 at Genoa, leaving both teams 10 points clear of fifth-placed Napoli with three games remaining in Serie B.

Both clubs were promoted from Serie C1 last season and have been frontrunners throughout the campaign.

Four teams are promoted from Serie B and Empoli and Reggina currently occupy the other two promotion slots on 64 points.

Napoli have 58 points while Salernitana's slim promotion hopes were dashed by a 2-1 loss to Reggina.

Bottom club Crotone were relegated to Serie C1 after they lost 2-1 at Siena.

Both newly-promoted clubs will be hoping to emulate the feat of Chievo Verona, who finished fifth in Serie A after winning promotion last season.

The town of Modena, birthplace of tenor Luciano Pavarotti, has waited 38 years for its team to regain top-flight status.

The 'Canaries', whose best ever season was a third-placed finish in Serie A in 1947, were relegated to Serie B in 1964 after losing a relegation play-off to Sampdoria at the San Siro stadium.

Despite being based in one of the wealthies areas of Italy, Modena's fortunes slumped in the 1970s culiminating in relegation to Serie C2, Italy's fourth division, for the first time in 1982.

The club's revival began in 1999 with the appointment of Gianni De Biasi as coach and the 45-year-old has now won two straight promotions.

Como's Sinigaglia stadium, a drop-kick from the shores of the picturesque Lake Como, will host Serie A football for the first time since 1989.

Relegation in that year ended a decade-long stay in the top-flight and it has been a long struggle in the lower ranks since.

After coming up from the third division last year, football has come alive again in the town.

Brazil-born former Belgian international striker Luis Oliveira, has scored 21 goals as Como left behind bigger-name clubs such as Napoli and Sampdoria.

Oliveira played four seasons for Fiorentina in the 1990s but will not have a chance to face his old club as they will swap places with Como following their relegation.

Venezia, Lecce and Verona were the other teams who were condemned to second division football next term.
