COPENHAGEN, Nov 29 (Reuters) - Denmark's FC Lyngby will become an amateur club next week after members voted in favour of bankruptcy rather than a merger with first division side FC Farum, Danish media reported on Thursday.
At an emotional meeting on Wednesday night, club members
rejected an offer to merge with the neighbouring first division
side by a vote of 124 to 20.
A condition of the merger was that Farum could chose on a
new name for the club, a new stadium venue, a new logo and new
team colours.
The decision means that Lyngby - based in north Copenhagen
and currently 10th in the 12-team Danish superleague - will
cease to exist as a professional club from next week.
They will continue to compete in the superleague for the
remainder of the season but will then drop two divisions.
Danish champions in 1992, Lyngby attempted a merger with
first division AC Ballerup last month, but the deal fell through.
Lyngby have been struggling to stay solvent since owner Jorn
Terkelsen ended his investment in the club.
