COPENHAGEN, Oct 23 (Reuters) - Faroe Islands manager Allan Simonsen is to become the national coach of Luxembourg on November 1, the Faroese Football Association said on Tuesday.
The former Danish international striker announced his resignation last week after eight years as Faroes coach. He will replace Paul Philipp, Luxembourg's coach for the past 17 years.
The islanders recently finished second from bottom in Group One in World Cup qualifying - above Luxembourg after beating them 2-0 away and 1-0 at home. Luxembourg lost all 10 of their qualifiers, conceding 28 goals in the process and scoring only four times.
Simonsen, 48, was capped 56 times by Denmark between 1972-86, scoring 21 goals. His club career included spells at Borussia Moenchengladbach, Barcelona and Charlton Athletic and he was voted European football player of the year in 1977.
