Nuno Gomes gives Fiorentina Italian Cup
By Gideon Long

FLORENCE, Italy, June 13 (Reuters) - A superbly worked equaliser from Portuguese striker Nuno Gomes gave Fiorentina a 1-1 draw with Parma on Wednesday and a 2-1 aggregate victory in the Italian Cup final.

Fiorentina led 1-0 from the first leg but conceded a 38th minute goal to Parma's Savo Milosevic and needed an equaliser to prevent the match going to extra time.

Coach Roberto Mancini threw on Nuno Gomes for defender Emiliano Moretti during the interval and the former Benfica marksman swept home a right foot shot in the 65th minute to cap a fine move and hand the Florentines their sixth Italian Cup title.

Parma had dominated the first half and looked capable of overturning their first leg deficit to give coach Renzo Ulivieri the first trophy of his long coaching career.

But it was Mancini who had the final say, claiming his first trophy as a manager and a record seventh Italian Cup title overall following successes as a player with both Sampdoria and Lazio.

Nuno Gomes' compatriot Rui Costa lifted the cup in front of a sea of purple flags and banners in a packed Artemio Franchi stadium. The trophy was only his second in seven years at the club.

It also capped the end of goalkeeper Francesco Toldo's career in Florence ahead of his move to Barcelona next season. Fiorentina will represent Italy in the UEFA Cup next season alongside Inter and AC Milan.

Parma had already clinched a place in the qualifying round of the European Champions League before Wednesday's match by finishing fourth in Serie A.

The shape of the clash was dictated from the outset by Fiorentina's away win in the first leg -- Mancini's side were happy to sit back and defend their aggregate lead while Parma had to attack.

But even so, the extent to which Parma dominated the first half was startling.

Brazilian wingback Junior and Sabri Lamouchi controlled the left flank while Milosevic and Belgian playmaker Johan Micoud stretched the Fiorentina defence at will.

Argentine midfielder Nestor Sensini forced Toldo to save on his own goal-line with an eighth minute header from a corner and in the 19th minute Marco Di Vaio and Milosevic sliced through the home defence before the Yugoslav fired his shot straight at the keeper.

Fiorentina's chances all came on the counter-attack. Junior, the smallest man on the pitch, rose to head away a Chiesa effort from under his own crossbar in the 28th minute and Rui Costa tested keeper Matteo Guardalben with a couple of long range efforts.

Parma deservedly took the lead in the 38th minute when Junior got to the touchline on the left and pulled the ball back for Milosevic, who scooped a first time left foot volley across the face of goal and into the far corner.

But Fiorentina were a different side after the break, with Nuno Gomes complimenting Chiesa up front and combining well with Rui Costa.

Midfielder Marco Rossi started the move which led to their goal with a pass to Chiesa.

The former Parma striker flicked the ball into the danger zone with the outside of his foot and Nuno Gomes turned and in one fluid movement blasted his shot into the far corner.

His equaliser kept Fiorentina's proud home record in the Italian Cup intact.

They have not lost here in the competition since December 1994 when, ironically, they were beaten by Parma.
