Halilhodzic may quit as Lille coach
By Olivier Hamoir

LILLE, France, March 28 (Reuters) - Coach Vahid Halilhodzic, who has led Lille to the brink of their first French league title since 1954, is considering quitting the club at the end of the season.

Bosnian-born Halilhodzic, 48, guided Lille to the second division title last season and they lead the first division with five rounds of matches remaining.

Francis Graille, who took over last week as club president from Luc Dayan, told a press conference that the club wanted Halilhodzic to stay.

But the coach said on Wednesday he was prepared to consider other offers.

Halilhodzic said he had not yet made a decision but added: 'It is not certain that I will stay. Last year I turned down an offer from a big club - and that could change next season.

'I have received several interesting offers from both within France and overseas that make proposals that Lille are not capable of matching.

'If I leave, I will leave with my head held high.'

Halilhodzic said he was unhappy with the infrastructure of the club.

'Certain things do not please me,' he said. 'We could improve the level of the stadium, the training facilities and the stability of the club.

'If we were to play European matches at the Stade Grimonprez-Jooris in its current state it would be shameful for the region.'

Graille said he was confident that Lille would convince Halilhodzic to stay.

'I can't imagine for an instant that he will not be with us next season,' the club president said. 'I hope he will stay.'

Lille are considering offering Halilhodzic the role of sporting manager, encompassing all aspects of the team, in addition to his coaching duties if he did decide to stay.

Halilhodzic was a player with Velez Mostar, Nantes, where he won a French league title, and Paris St Germain. He coached Velez, Beauvais and Moroccan side Raja Casablanca before joining Lille in 1998.

Meanwhile, French title chasers Nantes will be without attacking midfielder Alioune Toure for the remainder of the season, the club said in a statement on Wednesday.

Toure has suffered complications after being sidelined with a left calf muscle injury.

Toure will play no further part in Nantes' bid for a domestic treble.

The Canaries are currently joint leaders of the French first division with Lille and have also made the semifinals of the League Cup and the quarter-finals of the French Cup.
