NYON, Switzerland, March 9 (Reuters) - Real Madrid striker Raul was suspended for one match and fined 20,000 Swiss francs (£8,243) by UEFA's disciplinary board on Friday after his handball goal against Leeds United in the Champions League on Tuesday. | |

Raul scored Real's opener in their 3-2 win by turning a free-kick into the Leeds net with his hand. Although he claimed afterwards the goal was legitimate, video evidence proved he used his hand to score.
Polish referee Ryszard Wojcik did not see the incident, but apologised to Leeds after the match for letting the goal stand. In a statement, UEFA said they had taken into account that Raul was 'one of the fairest players in football' with only two
bookings in 100 international matches for his club and country, but said his action could not go unpunished.
Real Madrid immediately said they would appeal against the sanction. The one-match ban is not important to us,' said Jorge Valdano, the club's sporting director.
'But this stains the reputation of a player whose record is immaculate.'
The disciplinary board ruled that Raul's action was 'a manifest act of cheating committed deliberately with the sole objective of gaining personal profit from the act, which might have distorted the competition.'
Raul will now miss next week's Champions League match against Anderlecht in Brussels. However, the match is only of academic interest as Real have already qualified for the quarter-finals and Anderlecht have already been eliminated.
UEFA also said that as a result of Luis Figo getting himself booked deliberately in the 88th minute against Leeds to miss the match against Anderlecht, they would review their bookings procedure for club football.
Figo deliberately stood in front of the ball at an 88th minute free kick and was shown the yellow card for not allowing the kick to be taken.
That rules him too out of the low-key fixture against Anderlecht, and means he will be free to play in the far more serious matter of the quarter-final. Real will know their opponents in that game after next Friday's draw.
UEFA say they will now look again at the system of suspensions they use in club competitions with a view to stopping players serving those suspensions in the least
important matches.
On Thursday, the Spanish FA sent a letter to UEFA in support of Raul, who has never been sent off in seven seasons as a professional in Spain.
