ATHENS, Nov 25 (Reuters) - Olympiakos Piraeus coach Yiannis Matzourakis resigned on Saturday after just eight months in charge.
In a press release, club president Sokratis Kokkalis
confirmed that the Greek champions had agreed to part company
with Matzourakis who steered the club to their fourth
consecutive domestic championship in June.
His departure came two days after Olympiakos were held 2-2
at home by Liverpool in the UEFA Cup third round, first leg,
during which supporters turned their backs on the action to
demand the Romanian's departure.
'We would like to thank him for all his efforts, especially
during last season's league championship,' read the statement
from Kokkalis.
Olympiakos are now searching for their fourth coach in two
seasons after dropping out of the Champions League at the first
phase for the second successive year.
Former Paris Saint Germain coach Luis Fernandez was reported
in France Football magazine on Friday as saying he was in talks
with the Piraeus club over a coaching role.
Olympiakos won all their home matches in the opening phase
of the Champions League but finished third in their group
because of poor away form that culminated in a 1-0 defeat by
Lyon.
