Italians widen match-fixing probe

MILAN, Nov 23 (Reuters) - A Milan prosecutor said on Thursday he was widening investigations into alleged match-fixing in a case involving eight Italian First and Second Division players.

Three players from Serie A side Atalanta Bergamo and five from Serie B's Pistoiese face charges before the Italian Federation Disciplinary Committee, following an Italian Cup first round tie between the two sides which ended 1-1.

Prosecutor Carlo Porceddu said he wanted to look into two other matches played last season, Reggina-Verona in the Serie A and Serie B's Chievo-Atalanta game.

'We are going to investigate the Reggina-Verona and the Chievo-Atalanta matches because during the inquiry into Cristiano Doni we found other bets made by the Atalanta player on those matches,' Porceddu said.

Doni, 27, who has won plaudits for his performance this season, is one of the three Atalanta players involved in the case. The other two are Giacomo Banchelli and Sebastiano Siviglia.

The five from Pistoiese are: Alfredo Aglietti, Massimiliano Allegri, Daniele Amerini, Gianluca Lillo and Girolamo Bizzarri.

In the original Italian Cup investigation, the Snai body, which organises betting on Italian football, had said it had registered suspiciously heavy betting on a 1-1 result in the match between Atalanta and Pistoiese on August 20.

Both clubs and players denied any wrongdoing.

The prosecutor recommended to the disciplinary committee a three-year match suspension against seven of the eight players on charges relating to the Atalanta-Pistoiese case. He asked that Lillo be cleared of any wrongdoing.
