NANCY, France, Nov 18 (Reuters) - French Second Division club Nancy are threatening legal action after discovering that Strasbourg fielded an allegedly ineligible player last season.
Nancy were relegated from the First Division and Strasbourg survived after fielding Argentine player Diego Garay in 22 matches.
French newspaper L'Alsace reported earlier this week that Garay played in France with a false Italian passport. Strasbourg have subsequently loaned him to Argentine club Talleres Cordoba.
One of the games Garay played in was Nancy's 3-2 win over Strasbourg on April 8 - a match that proved crucial in the relegation battle in wich Nancy were eventually relegated on goal difference.
The alleged fake passport meant that Strasbourg could use Garay as one of their European Community players, freeing up one of the three non-EU places for another player.
A Nancy spokesman said on Saturday that the club was considering action in a civil court for damages.
