STOCKHOLM, Nov 5 (Reuters) - AIK Stockholm's Scottish trainer Stuart Baxter said on Sunday he was quitting after a disappointing season in wich the ambitious Stockholm club could finish only third in the Swedish First Division.
Baxter said he was leaving of his own accord with one year of his contract still to run. 'I don't have confidence about the future,' Baxter told Swedish television but he refused to be drawn on the reasons he felt that way.
Baxter has more than once questioned the commitment of some AIK players, many of whom are amateurs, and there have been reports of friction in training and with the club management.
AIK are the biggest and richest club in the Sweden but injuries to key players, a dismal run in the UEFA Cup and only third place in the league prompted some fans to demand Baxter's departure when the season ended on Saturday.
In Baxter's three years at AIK the club won the Swedish championship in 1998, were runners-up in 1999 when they also won the Swedish cup.
Baxter said he had no job lined up and would remain at AIK until November 30.
'I would like to go to one of the big five soccer countries as a trainer,' Baxter said, naming Germany, Britain, France, Italy and Spain.
Baxter has previously been trainer at Vitoria Setubal in Portugal, Hiroshima and Kobe in Japan and at several Swedish clubs including this year's champions Halmstad.
