Sparta bounce back while Ferencvaros face drop
By Simon Evans

MILAN, Sept 18 (Reuters) - Sparta Prague bounced back from a midweek defeat to Arsenal in the Champions League with a 3-0 win over Petra Drnovice, maintaining their 100 percent record in the Czech league.

Hungarian club Ferencvaros face the real threat of relegation to the second division after their latest humiliating defeat dropped them a point from the cut-off zone for Hungary's new-look first division.

CZECH REPUBLIC

Sparta Prague recovered quickly from Tuesday's Champions League loss to Arsenal with a convincing 3-0 home victory over Petra Drnovice. Sparta took the lead after 11 minutes with a deflected long range shot from wing back Michal Hornak.

Striker Marek Kincl then struck twice for Sparta, who remain top of the league with a 100 per cent record from six games. Slovan Liberec remain two points behind Sparta, in second place, after beating Viktoria Plzen 2-0 at home on Sunday thanks to two goals from their Slovak midfielder Rastislav Michalik.

HUNGARY

Ferencvaros's nightmare season continued with a 3-0 defeat to lowly Haladas of Szombathely in Group A. Hungary's most popular club now face the real prospect of losing their top flight status for the first time in their 100 year history when the revived championship begins in November.

Brazilian Alex de Paula scored twice for Haladas and Peter Halmosi grabbed the third. Ferencvaros are in sixth place one point above the relegation zone in Group A and face a tough game against champions Dunaferr on Wednesday.

The Hungarian league has been split into two groups of eight with the top six in each group making up the new 12-team first division wich will kick off in November. Ujpest won their Budapest derby clash with Vasas and moved within one point of Group B leaders MTK who could only draw 2-2 away to Debrecen.

Ujpest goalkeeper Szabolcs Biro gave a brilliant performance and was only beaten by a penalty from Vasas striker Peter Kabat. Ujpest took the the lead in the 54th minute after midfielder Attila Korsos scored from close range and defender Florian Urban converted a penalty in 78th to seal the victory.

Kabat's consolation goal came 10 minutes from the final whistle.

BOSNIA

Zeljeznicar Sarajevo moved to the top of the table after their first away victory of the season. A 4-1 win over relegation battlers Krajina Cazin leaves the Sarajevo club with 16 points.

Zeljeznicar's captain Dzemaludin Muharemovic scored twice and remains the league's top scorer with nine goals. Brotnjo Citluk lost 2-1 at lowly Kiseljak to drop to second with 15 points. Siroki Brijeg beat Ljubuski 2-1 at home to rise to third position with 14 points.

YUGOSLAVIA

Yugoslav champions Red Star enjoyed a 2-0 win at Vojvodina Novi Sad on Sunday to maintain their unbeaten record and a three-point lead over local rivals Partizan and Obilic. Dragan Stevanovic put the league leaders on their way in the 44th minute and substitute Mihajlo Pjanovic, who came on in the 75th minute, sealed the win seven minutes from time.

Partizan showed no signs of fatigue after a gruelling midweek UEFA Cup draw with Porto and crusied to an emphatic 4-0 win over Napredak Krusevac. Zvonimir Vukic scored two goals in the closing stages after Vladimir Ivic and Milorad Pekovic had put the home side in front.

Obilic beat Sartid Smederevo to stay in touch with the leaders thanks to a solitary strike by Nenad Mladenovic.

CROATIA

Three top Croatian teams, Dinamo, Rijeka and Osijek rested after successful UEFA Cup matches last week. Tuesday will see Dinamo clash with long-term rivals Hajduk Split in what has become known as the 'Derby of Croatia.'

The most anticipated match of the season will lack some of the flavour of previous years, with both teams rocked by financial scandals and lack of money that has forced them to sell their best players abroad. A win for either side will install them at the top of the table.

Dinamo currently share the top spot with NK Zagreb after they scored an emphatic 4-2 win over Cibalia Vinkovci.

POLAND

Early season league leaders Pogon Szczecin needed a late goal from Dariusz Gesior to beat lowly Ruch Radzinkow 1-0 at home. Second placed Wisla Krakow continued their strong run, easily defeating mid-table Stomil Olsztyn 3-0 with Tomasz Frankowski netting his sixth of the season.

The Warsaw derby between last year's champions Polonia and Legia ended 0-0 after the game was stopped for about 10 minutes when fans invaded the pitch. The fans destroyed advertisements hoardings before police and security forces regained control and the match was restarted.

ROMANIA

A goal from midfielder N'Gassam Falemi helped Steaua Bucharest to draw 1-1 in Bistrita against Gloria and keep them on top of the table. Steaua lead by a point from Universitatea Craiova, who won 2-0 at home to National Bucharest, thanks to first half strikes from Claudiu Niculescu and Ciprian Danciu.

Defender Daniel Prodan, on loan from Glasgow Rangers, was sent off just 17 minutes into his debut for Rocar Bucharest. But despite playing the bulk of the game with ten men, Rocar came from behind to beat Gaz Metan Medias 2-1 with both goals coming inside the last four minutes.

Forward Claudiu Dragan and defender Daniel Florea scored for reigning champions Dinamo Bucharest in their 2-1 victory over Arges Pitesti.

BULGARIA

CSKA Sofia's 19-year-old forward Dimitar Berbatov was on target again scoring twice in his team's 2-0 win over Velbazhd Kyustendil. CSKA remain on top of the table ahead of champions Levski Sofia on goal difference.

Levski's 1-0 win over Spartak Varna came thanks to a 10th minute penalty converted by goalkeeper Dimitar Ivankov. Lokomotiv Sofia kept in touch with a 3-0 home win against Cherno More Varna.

UKRAINE

Champions Dynamo Kiev passed up on the chance of another league and cup double at the weekend as they rested their first team before their Champions League clash with Manchester United on Tuesday.

Ukraine's top club decided to field a second team side in the second round of the Ukrainian Cup on Saturday. Despite being way under strength, Dynamo held second division side Spartak Sumy to a 0-0 draw after full time.

But they fell short during the penalty shoot out, losing 4-2 to Spartak. Ukraine's other top premier division sides easily made it through to the next round of the cup.

Shakhtar Donetsk, facing their own Champions League test at Arsenal on Wednesday, beat second division side Polygrafteknika Aleksandria 3-0 helped by a seventh minute goal by top striker Andriy Vorobei.
