VIENNA, Aug 10 (Reuters) - Austria's soccer federation has been approached by Switzerland's head of state Adolf Ogi to discuss a possible joint-bid for Euro 2008, the weekly News magazine reported on Thursday.
Austrian federation president Beppo Mauhart told News: 'He
(Ogi) is very enthusiastic about the idea, opposition can only
come from the Swiss soccer league.'
Mauhart said he had already held talks about a possible bid
with the Austrian government and that their approval was
expected in the autumn.
The Swiss president, who formerly coached his country's
national Alpine skiing team, approached Mauhart at a recent FIFA
congress. The two countries share a border.
Austria had presented a joint-bid for Euro 2004 with their
eastern-most neighbours Hungary but, although they collected
more votes than Spain, saw the tournament awarded to Portugal.
