GELSENKIRCHEN, May 4 (Bundesliga) - Tomislav Maric scored a goal in each half as Wolfsburg shocked UEFA Cup qualifiers Schalke with a 2-1 win at the AufSchalke Arena.
But the visitors had to endure a frantic finale to the match, when Gerald Asamoah scored in stoppage time.
The first meaningful attack of the match came after eight minutes but Maric hit high and wide after a powerful shot from Martin Petrov rebounded off Schalke keeper Oliver Reck.
However with 15 minutes of the half remaining, Maric made amends for his earlier miss as he put his side ahead.
It was Dorinel Munteanu's run into the box that allowed Maric to take up a position four yards out to slot home into the bottom left hand corner.
The goal allowed Wolfsburg to sit on their lead until half-time as Schalke created little in front of goal.
The visitors almost doubled their lead seven minutes after the break, but Robson Ponte's free-kick was held by keeper Oliver Reck.
Schalke finally created their first decent chance of the match in the 73rd minute, when van Hoogdalem met an Andreas Moller corner, only for Dorinel Muteanu to help his keeper Claus Reitmaier clear the ball.
Wolfsburg soon doubled their advantage with only eight minutes remaining, again through striker Maric, who fired home from eight yards into the bottom left hand corner.
The home side reduced the deficit to one goal with almost the last kick of the match, when Gerald Asamoah capitalised on a clearance by Wolfsburg keeper Claus Reitmaier, and slotted home for the home side.end
