Updated Wednesday March 29, 2000 Czechs cruise to easy win over Australia
It was an easy win for the Euro 96 runners-up as they set about their preparation for this year's tournament. But they were missing several first-choice players. Liverpool midfielder Patrik Berger, who will miss the first two Euro 2000 games due to suspension, injured playmaker Pavel Horvath, striker Vladimir Smicer and first choice goalkeeper Pavel Srnicek were all absent. The Czechs, who won all 10 off their Euro 2000 qualifying games, scored after nine minutes when defender Fukal headed in Lazio midfielder Pavel Nedved's corner. Lanky Anderlecht striker Koller added the second seven minutes after the interval, heading home a cross from midfielder Martin Cizek for his 12th goal in 11 internationals. But the best goal came in the 67th minute after a sweet move. Karel Poborsky took the ball from Koller before back-heeling a return. Koller than slipped the ball to an unmarked Ulich who passed the ball into an empty net. Australia, who beat Hungary 3-0 last month but who were missing their leading player Harry Kewell on Wednesday, had few opportunities and did not produce a decent shot in the first half. Mark Viduka got past Fukal half an hour into the game but failed to get around goalie Jaromir Blazek who snatched the ball from his foot. They did manage a last-minute consolation when Blazek failed to cut out a pass to Crystal Palace midfielder Craig Foster, who put the ball away.
