The England captain will retire from international football at the end of the Euro 2000 finals before his 30th birthday to spend more time with his club and family and will be determined to make his mark in his final tournament appearance. Shearer will certainly want to ensure that his often self-quoted goal average for England - 28 in 58 games - rises back above the one-in-two ratio, especially given the continuing question-marks over his place due to the loss of a yard in pace following injury problems. A lack of goals in the warm-up games, especially against Ukraine in his final Wembley appearance and the underwhelming performance against Malta, will have done nothing to dent his confidence. He nevertheless remains England's best hope for goals this summer and has scored in abundance this season for Newcastle, where he was indebted - following his fall-out with Ruud Gullit - to the influence of Robson in ensuring that he plays less with his back to the net. As ever, Shearer's prodigous work-rate - pulling wide or harrying defenders - was an inspiration against Portugal. Captain Marvel responded with England's winner against Germany and will have been pleased with a typically forceful display. Calmly slotted home the penalty against Romania to get England back in the game.
