Profile:

Veteran defender who started his career at the dizzy heights of Everton but never made the grade before making a free switch to Middlesbrough.

Made his name at Ayresome Park, making 258 appearances for the club in a seven year spell.

Had a spell on loan at Southend United before joining Bolton Wanderers on a free transfer in March 1994. Failed to make an impression at Boundary Park and joined Burnley ten months later.

Again impressed with Burnley, making 162 appearances for the club.

It was the summer of 1997 that local rivals Preston North End registered their interest in the player and snapped him up for £50,000.

A valuable player who struggled with injury at the start of the 2000/01 season.

Eventually left on transfer deadline day in March 2001 to join Third Division play-off hopefuls Blackpool.
