Arsenal snapped up Cygan in July 2002 from French side Lille for an undisclosed fee - believed to be in the region of £5.5million.
Cygan helped Lille win promotion into Le Championnat in 2000 and gained experience in both the Champions League and the UEFA Cup with his side. He has faced Arsenal's rivals Manchester United in European competition.
France's disappointing display at the 2002 World Cup have boosted the centre-back's hopes of earning his first cap for his country - and being voted the best player in France for the 2000/01 season will do his chances no harm.
On signing the player, boss Arsene Wenger said: 'Pascal is a fantastic defender with great ability and has proved that he can compete at the highest level from his performances for Lille in last year's Champions League.
'He is an extremely consistent player and will fit in very well at Arsenal. I am very positive he will be a fantastic asset to the team.
Cygan added: 'I am very excited about joining Arsenal. I am also looking forward to working with Arsene Wenger who is recognised as one of the best coaches as well as being part of a squad with many world class players.'
Started the 2002/03 season behind Sol Campbell and Martin Keown in the Highbury pecking order.
