Profile:

The arrival of the Turkish defender was a coup for Aston Villa and came as a big surprise for his club Fenerbahce, who were expecting him to re-sign after Euro 2000.

A strong man, who plays regularly as a sweeper, he was a vital part of the Turks progression in the tournament - before he was sent off against the Portuguese.

Alpay cost Villa £5.6million and he soon became a vital player, forging a great defensive partnership with Gareth Southgate.

Made his debut in a goalless draw with Leicester City at Filbert Street.

However, the 2001/02 campaign was not a happy one for Alpay. After starting the season well he was injured, ironically, against Leicester and he did not play for Villa again that season.

Alpay was then quoted at saying he was unhappy at the club and it was speculated that he would leave Villa Park after just two seasons. Boss Graham Taylor was desperate to keep hold of him and reunite him with Olof Mellberg at the heart of the club's defence.

In the meantime, Alpay went to the World Cup with Turkey. It all started badly, however, as he was sent off in the opening game against Brazil. He would return to form as Turkey finished an excellent third in the tournament.

In July 2002 he stated he was happy to stay with Villa if they wanted him, and Taylor certainly did. But the stories of unrest continued and after a series of meetings Alpay handed in a transfer request just before the start of the new season.
