James aiming to take over Seaman role

David James has no hesitation in stating that his primary ambition for the new season is to establish himself as England's No 1.

James, newly-installed as West Ham captain for the opening match at Newcastle tonight, has no fears about the responsibilities of the job and no apprehension about staking his claim to be the successor to England goalkeeper David Seaman.

James, who moved from Aston Villa to West Ham last summer, said: 'The main aim is to be England's No 1 and the only way to do that is to improve on what I did for West Ham last season.'

A knee injury suffered playing for England against Holland before the start of last season ruled James out for more than three months. After fighting his way back to fitness he made England's squad at the World Cup but did not play a game.

Meanwhile, West Ham's new midfielder, Edouard Cisse, who was signed in a one-year loan deal from Paris St Germain, looks certain to make his Premiership debut on Monday night.

West Ham manager Glenn Roeder includes former Liverpool striker Titi Camara in his squad and said: 'Titi is the fittest and the most motivated he's been since he arrived here.

'He's scored regularly in pre- season and he deserves to be in the squad.'

Newcastle will have Olivier Bernard, the player Roeder tried to sign on a free transfer during the summer, in their team.
