West Brom midfielder Andy Johnson has been assured that he will still figure in manager Gary Megson's plans despite handing in a shock transfer request just three days before the start of the Barclaycard Premiership season.

Albion have reluctantly agreed to Johnson's transfer request with the player unhappy at the terms of a new contract offered by the Baggies.

But Megson insisted that Johnson would still have a significant part to play and he is included in the squad for Saturday's opening home match with Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Megson said: 'We have reluctantly agreed to his transfer request.

'That in itself doesn't mean a great deal and now we'll see who comes in for him and how they value him.

'But it won't affect my relationship with Andy. We get on really well.

'I've got a lot of time for him and him doing this won't affect whether he plays or not. His form will affect that.

'It comes down to him having been made an offer which he doesn't think is the right one for him and so he's now got to the point where the right thing for him to do is to ask for a transfer.'
