Rennes made it clear that to sell the defender would leave them with a selection crisis, but they then asked for two weeks to consider the potential deal.

Escude is valued in the #5million bracket, but Rennes rate the 22-year-old as the key member of their back line and believe he could benefit from another year in French football.

General manager Pierre Dreossi said: 'Manchester have confirmed their interest in the player.

'But we are not interested in such a transfer as it is too late in the season and to find a suitable replacement would be difficult.'

United are seeking back-up for their first choice centre-back pairing of Rio Ferdinand and Laurent Blanc.

Ferdinand twisted his ankle in yesterday's friendly against Boca Juniors and faces a fight to be fit for next Saturday's opening Barclaycard Premiership game of the season against West Brom, while former French international Blanc is 36 and about to begin his final season.

Escude fits the bill for United who are looking at youthful talent to mould into a long-lasting back four, and the fact he can also perform at left-back has heightened the interest of manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

United were given some hope this afternoon when Dreossi refused to close the door on the transfer going through.

'We will reflect on the situation in the interests of everyone.'

Rennes plan to meet again with United representatives in a fortnight, and face a struggle to persuade Escude against a move to Old Trafford.

Speaking after Rennes were held to a goalless draw by Troyes last night, Escude admitted he wanted to leave soon.

'I have done my time at Rennes,' he said.

'I can't pass up such an opportunity.'
