West Ham captain Di Canio was linked with a switch to Old Trafford last season.

Now agent Matteo Roggi believes United manager Sir Alex Ferguson should make a fresh bid for the 34-year-old Italian.

'It is clear that Mr Ferguson likes him as a player,' Roggi told the Daily Star. 'I think now is the right time for a transfer as Paolo is on a Bosman free at the end of the season.

'The people from Manchester United have got our number, so if anything is to be done they will call us.

'It makes Paolo feel proud that Manchester United are looking at him. He would like it to happen and it would be the cherry on the cake of his career.

'But if nothing happens he will still have a great season with West Ham.'

  • United will enter the new season without a number nine following the announcement of their squad list today.

The shirt vacated by Andy Cole following his move to Blackburn last season remains empty, although that could change should a bid for Di Canio occur.
