Redknapp: Spurs bound (MikeHewitt/Allsport) |
The 28-year-old has been dogged by injury over the past few seasons and, with his contract up in the summer, Liverpool agreed to cancel his current deal to enable him to make the move to north London.
'Tottenham Hotspur plc is pleased to announce that agreement has been reached with Jamie Redknapp for the transfer of his registration to Tottenham Hotspur Football Club under a four-year contract,' said a Tottenham statement.
Redknapp, who had been at Anfield since 1991, making 310 appearances for the club, actually began his career at White Hart Lane as a schoolboy before joining his father, Harry, at Bournemouth.
The England international was signed for Liverpool by Kenny Dalglish for £350,000 from the south coast club. The midfielder was the longest serving player in the current Liverpool squad.
Capped 17 times by his country, he played more than 200 Premier League games for the Anfield outfit - but figured in only eight games for Liverpool this season. He had not played since the Champions League group match against Borussia Dortmund at Anfield on October 30.
Redknapp had netted twice this season, in the 4-1 Champions League qualifying victory over FC Haka in August and in the 2-0 win at Charlton on October 27.
'He will be sadly missed by fans and team mates alike and everyone at Liverpool wishes him well with the rest of his career,' Liverpool's official website remarked.
Spurs manager Glenn Hoddle told the club's official website, spurs.co.uk: 'We're absolutely delighted to have him on board. He's a class player, one I had in the England squad when I was manager, an excellent professional and he's joined us on a free transfer.
'I'm sure Spurs fans out there, within four months of next season when he's settled and playing, they'll be saying he's one of the best signings the club has made - especially on a free transfer.
'In today's market you are talking six or seven million pounds because he can pass the ball and he can play. He's a Spurs player, a player in the style and traditions of the club and I'm sure the fans will enjoy watching him.
'We wanted him, he wanted to come, Liverpool kindly said we could talk to him, they knew he was out of contract at the end of the season and they offered him a good contract to stay.
'We've beaten off a few other clubs and Jamie wanted come here. He's delighted to be here and we're delighted to have him. He will be a major, major influence on us taking the club forward.
'He's had a few injuries and we had to be aware and monitor that. I'm confident he's over them. In many ways, I was asked the same questions about Darren and Les at the start of this season and I think Les has had his best season since he's been here and Darren the same, he's almost got himself into the World Cup squad.
"There are similar things that we will be working on with Jamie and we've already spoken about them. Let's see what happens in 12 months - he could be the steal of the decade.'
Redknapp himself told spurs.co.uk: 'I couldn't be happier. I'm looking forward to working with the gaffer and John Gorman, I worked with them for England and I'm looking forward to working with them again now.
'I'm just so excited and I'm only looking at so many positive things now. It's nice to have that buzz and that spring in my step. It's a new beginning for me. I've been at Liverpool for 11 years which is a long time in modern day football. The way things have gone is absolutely perfect for me.'
