A bishop has been called in to lift a gipsy curse from the new ground of Nationwide Third Division club Oxford United.
The Rt Reverend Richard Harries, the Bishop of Oxford, performed an exorcism at the ground after chairman Firoz Kassam, who named the new stadium after himself, was left furious at 13 defeats in 17 games which has seen the club slump towards the bottom of the league.
Kassam told The Sun: 'The Bishop of Oxford has done his bit. Now it is down
to the players to do theirs. The gipsy curse is lifted so we have no excuse.'
The £15million Kassam Stadium was built on a farmer's field from which gipsies
had to be evicted before work could start. The ceremony was performed before Saturday's 2-2 draw with York City.
'Let's hope the draw was a turn in form and that we start winning games,' added Kassam. 'The whole curse thing was a talking point among the fans.'
