Sol makes debut as Gunners cruise to victory

Arsenal 2 - 0 Real Mallorca

Sol Campbell made a low-key debut for Arsenal, coming on for the last ten minutes as his new side cruised to a comfortable 2-0 victory over Spanish outfit Real Mallorca.

The 26-year-old England international defender replaced Igors Stepanovs to the delight of the watching Gunners fans in Austria, and was never tested thereafter.

Earlier, an own-goal from Turkish full-back Fatih Akyel and a close-range finish from Dutchman Giovanni van Bronckhorst either side of half time capped an encouraging performance from Arsene Wenger's team.

Mallorca were always second best and rarely threatened the Londoners' ever reliable rearguard.

It was no surprise when the Premiership side took the lead midway through the first half.

French star Patrick Vieira made a typically forceful break from midfield and played the ball into the penalty area, where Fatih just nipped in ahead of the onrushing Dennis Bergkamp but succeeded only in diverting the ball past Leo Franco and into his own net.

That was the highlight of a scrappy first period in which both sides looked rather sluggish, due no doubt to the heavy pre-season training schedule to which they have been subjected.

And Wenger was more aware than anyone of the fact that his heavy-duty regime had taken its toll on his players, making six-half time substitutions including summer signings van Bronckhorst and Francis Jeffers.

But the Gunners, desperate to get back to winning ways after last Wednesday's 4-1 hammering at the hand of Turkish side Kocaelispor, struggled to get into their stride in the second half and missed the pace and penetration of French striker Thierry Henry, who departed at half-time.

Former Everton striker Jeffers, clearly keen to make his mark after his £8million move, saw his 25-yard shot after 50 minutes well saved by Carlos Roa on for Franco at half-time, after midfielder Marcos clumsily lost the ball in midfield.

That chance allowed Arsenal to rediscover their rhythm and they almost doubled their advantage a minute later, but Swede Freddie Ljungberg, another substitute, shot straight at Roa after a delightful through-ball from Ashley Cole sent him clear inside the area.

Argentinian international Roa was once more in the spotlight on the hour mark, saving well from Sylvain Wiltord following a right-wing cross from Jermaine Pennant.

The Gunners finally got the second goal their superior play deserved 10 minutes later when Roa could only push the impressive Pennant's centre to the waiting van Bronckhorst, who made no mistake from 12 yards.

The arrival of former Spurs man Campbell after 80 minutes was the icing on the cake for Arsenal, whose confidence will have been restored ahead of next week's friendly with Italian champions Roma.
