Bergkamp set to miss Munich journey after all
By Steve Stammers

Dennis Bergkamp's hopes of playing against Bayern Munich in the Champions League in Germany on Wednesday look certain to be frustrated by injury.

The Arsenal striker has made it clear he wants to be involved in the game the Gunners must win to guarantee reaching the quarterfinals.

Bergkamp, who refuses to fly, was willing to make the journey by road. Manager Arsene Wenger has been reluctant to give his blessing to such an arduous overland excursion in the past but he had not ruled the Dutch international out of his thinking for Wednesday.

However, Bergkamp was forced off in the second half of Arsenal's FA Cup sixth round tie against Blackburn - a match that was won 3-0 with goals from Sylvain Wiltord, Tony Adams and Robert Pires - on Saturday.

Bergkamp received lengthy treat-ment yesterday for a hamstring injury and is now unlikely to travel to Munich.

That leaves Wenger sweating on news of Nigerian striker Nwankwo Kanu.

He was on international duty against Ghana yesterday and was due to arrive in London early this morning to join up with the squad in readiness for the Bayern game.

Without him, Arsenal would be left with just two strikers in a season when the rotation of the front players at Highbury has attracted so much attention.

Wenger will be hoping that Kanu will not be too exhausted to take a place on the substitutes' bench to provide one further attacking option against Bayern.

If Bergkamp is left behind, he will have valuable time to get fit for the next Premiership engagement at Aston Villa on Sunday.

Whatever happens he will have been lifted by the prospect of filling a void in his career which was previously caused by another ham-string injury three years ago.

It has been Bergkamp's dream to play in an FA Cup Final and that dream was set to become reality in 1998 when Arsenal were in pursuit of The Double.

He had contributed hugely to Arsenal reaching Wembley against Newcastle but succumbed to injury just 24 hours before the Final.

He had finished the Premiership season with a hamstring niggle and was still bothered by it in the days leading up to the Final.

He declared he would have to make 'the hardest decision of my career' when it came to the judge-ment about his fitness.

He took that decision after a fit-ness test the day before Wembley when he pulled out of the team.

A year later, at Villa Park, Bergkamp again tasted FA Cup despair when his missed penalty in the last minute of the semi-final against Manchester United cost Arsenal a place in the Final.

This season he wants to make amends for those huge setbacks with a May trip to Cardiff.
