Jones, who plays his football with the Los Angeles Galaxy, already has a deal lined up with MLS but is reportedly looking for a move to the UK.
The 30-year-old forward was the Galaxy's top scorer last term and helped lead the club to victory in the Football Confederation Champions Cup.
Jones' Agent Cory Clemetson said: 'The offer from MLS is a good one. There are still some issues to be worked out about where he'll play and some of the marketing details, and he just wants to take this opportunity to see what else is out there.
'I think he deserves and has earned the right to do that.'
The veteran American has experience at the top level and represented his national team in every game at the 1994 and 1998 World Cups. He is also the youngest player in the world to reach 100 international caps.
Jones is believed to have rejected a 'maximum-salary contract with marketing tie-ins and performance bonuses' in order to consider his options abroad but Clemetson refutes the claims.
