Match Preview: Charlton - Blackburn
Soccernet.com

South African Shaun Bartlett hopes he is the long-term answer to Charlton's chronic goal shortage.

The Addicks, who face Blackburn at The Valley, have managed a paltry five goals in their last 11 league and cup matches.

But they have displayed a greater threat up front since Bartlett's return.

A serious knee injury, aggravated further on international duty, meant the 30-year-old striker had not started a Premiership contest for 10 months when he was recalled against Manchester United.

He has since scored twice, the second securing Charlton's third away win of the campaign at Manchester City a week ago.

Bartlett chose to miss South Africa's rugby union clash with England at Twickenham after a gruelling 11-hour each way midweek trip home for an international friendly with Senegal.

He scored the opening goal - his 25th for Bafana Bafana - in the 1-1 draw in Johannesburg on Tuesday and hopes that his two goals in a week can be the start of a scoring spree.

"Whenever I score for Charlton I seem to go away and score for the national team," said Bartlett, who has relinquished the South African captaincy because of off-field issues.

"So I hope that it can continue. It has happened to me quite a few times during my career where I score in five or six games in a row.

"Playing at home we need to get a result and a convincing one - something like 3-0 - which can give the crowd something to celebrate."

That is something The Valley faithful have done only once this season, however, as Charlton's poor home record has blighted their start to the season.

The Addicks lost their opening four matches on their own patch.

But Bartlett hopes they are due a break or two, adding: "We have created a lot of chances, we've been playing well, we just haven't capitalised on what we have created.

"There have been losses we could have drawn and drawn games we could have won - hopefully we can now start to score more goals."

Charlton will be without summer signings Robbie Mustoe (thigh) and Jesper Blomqvist (knee) once again while Mathias Svensson (ankle) should be back next week.

Former Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Alan Kelly is determined to make the most of a rare outing in the top flight.

Kelly steps up for the first time in the Premiership this season when Blackburn travel south.

The 34-year-old replaces Brad Friedel, who is recovering from minor knee surgery.

Kelly said: "You have got to keep yourself right, mentally and physically. When the chance comes, you've got to go and do a job.

"I have played over 500 games now and am old enough and wise enough to know that if you haven't got that edge, you won't perform.

"Because you are on the bench, it doesn't mean you no longer have the hunger or don't want to play. I am still ambitious. Once that goes you lose something."
