West Ham finally got their season up and running with a comprehensive victory which gave the Hammers their first win of the season and extended Newcastle's winless run in London.

It was a dream home debut for Don Hutchison - in his second spell at Upton Park after being signed earlier this month from Sunderland for £5million - as he headed the Hammers in front after 18 minutes, their first goal in open play this season.West Ham captain Paolo di Canio scored a brilliant individual goal after 52 minutes and Frederic Kanoute slotted home the third goal nine minutes before the end to seal the three points and lift West Ham off the bottom of the Premiership.
Newcastle looked a shadow of the side who put four past Manchester United last weekend. Bobby Robson's men may have arrived at Upton Park unbeaten in their last 13 matches, but they could not end their London jinx.
The Magpies have failed to win in the capital for four years, spanning an amazing 26 games. Their last victory in London came at Selhurst Park, when they beat Crystal Palace 2-1.
Hutchison set the ball rolling after being set up by Laurent Courtois, a tricky French midfielder who arrived at Upton Park almost unnoticed in the summer from Toulouse.
Di Canio's right-wing corner was tapped short to Courtois and his cross was headed home powerfully by Hutchison inside the six-yard box.
Alan Shearer should have equalised within a minute. Robbie Elliott swung in a free-kick from the left and the former England striker uncharacteristically headed over from close range.
West Ham hit back immediately and a goalmouth scramble ended with Elliott clearing Trevor Sinclair's shot off the line.
It was fast and furious and after 24 minutes Christian Dailly was guilty of failing to clear a Newcastle through ball and Craig Bellamy's shot had to be helped over the crossbar by Shaka Hislop.
A minute later, Hutchison was back in his own six-yard box clearing a dangerous low cross.
Tomas Repka, also making his home debut, fired over from di Canio's corner after 30 minutes as West Ham went in search of a second goal.
Glenn Roeder's men were playing with confidence, and there were plenty of clever flicks and touches from the likes of Di Canio and Kanoute.
Kanoute went it alone after 36 minutes when he cut in from the right and saw his fierce shot blocked by Shay Given, with di Canio following up to volley wide.
There was a let-off for West Ham after 40 minutes when Bellamy crossed from the right and Laurent Robert - who was having a quiet half - miskicked from six yards.
Former Newcastle goalkeeper Hislop was relieved to see Elliott's corner come off Kanoute and into his chest in the final minute of the half.
Kanoute gave West Ham a great chance of doubling their lead a minute after the re-start.
He beat three defenders as he made it to the byline but when he sent over a teasing cross it was missed completely by di Canio as he tried an acrobatic volley.
But di Canio made amends when he scored a superb individual goal. Released down the left by Dailly's ball over the top, he turned Barton inside out before firing low into the far corner off the post.
Courtois was making a big impact on his full debut and he made a vital goalline clearance after 57 minutes.
Robert's left-wing corner was met with a powerful header from Clarence Acuna, but Courtois held his ground at the far post and headed off the line.
Di Canio had another good shooting chance when he got behind Distin after 65 minutes, but he scooped his shot into the arms of grateful Given.
Then a di Canio corner after 68 minutes was met with a sweet volley by Carrick, but Shearer got in the way with an important block.
After 78 minutes, Sebastian Schemmel played a great one-two with Sinclair down the right and pulled the ball back to Kanoute, but his shot was brilliantly tipped round the post by Given.
But Kanoute had the last word when Hutchison and di Canio combined down the right and the ball fell kindly for the big French striker to slot the ball past Given.
