Whelan returns to Shrimpers squad to face Hartlepool
Southend defender Phil Whelan will return for the Shrimpers' clash with high-flying Hartlepool at Roots Hall.
Whelan completed a two-match ban against Darlington on Tuesday, where Tesfaye Bramble's late strike secured a 1-1 draw at Feethams.
United appear to have got their play-off push back on track following a five-game losing streak, but Hartlepool - unbeaten in 13 games - will provide another stern test for the Blues.
Assistant boss Mick Gooding said: "They have had a good run but we know that if we play as well as we know we can, we will give them a good game."
Hartlepool boss Chris Turner will add Paul Arnison and Sam Shilton to the squad which travels to Essex.
Arnison came through a friendly game against Brann Bergen on Monday and suffered no ill-effects following a knee injury.
Shilton returns to the squad after battling to shake off a bout of flu which has kept him out for couple of weeks.
Turner, who's side are pushing for an automatic promotion spot, said: "We are expecting a tough game as they are still pushing for a play-off place."
